Minecraft and 3D Printing
I decided to do some 3D printing from the things I made in Minecraft as Batman...
Requirements
Designing or Downloading Minecraft Worlds
3D printing model design constraints are the same Minecraft as in any other kind of modelling software. One of the biggest design challenges to overcome is overhang. There are many designs that I can create in Minecraft that I can not 3D print.
For Example
The design on the right side is impossible to 3D print (current orientation) because it is not attached and the overhang angle is at 90 degrees. The design on the left side is possible but may fall over mid print due to the fact that the surface area that is sticking to the bed is too small. (This can be fixed with orientation)
There are also many worlds online that is free for downloading. I downloaded a world on Minecraft Maps and imported a part of it for 3D printing.
Exporting Worlds as STL or OBJ
I made this house in minecraft using the creative mode setting!
- Open Mineways
- Load the world the building is in by going to File -> Open World -> [Name of the world]
- Right Click and drag the area for 3D printing
- Export for 3D printing by going to File-> Export for 3D Printing
- Change "Save as type" to OBJ or STL
- Save file
Slicing for 3D Printing
Using Tinkerine Suite I sliced my filed from a STL/OBJ to a Gcode file.
